Millennium Systems values ecological sustainability and we are aware that running a datacenter can be detrimental to the environment. The IT (Information Technology) industry is the fastest growing sector of energy use in the market. In this country, 61 billion kilowatt hours of electricity go toward datacenter energy consumption. At this rate, we will need 10-15 more power plants by 2011 to keep up with all this power. We are doing our very best to keep our energy consumption low.

We reduce our resource usage around the office and the data center as much as possible. Two of our AC units are high SEER Puron units (seasonal energy efficiency rating) and as our datacenter grows, we continue to purchase energy-efficient machines. We recycle our computer parts, paper, aluminum cans and anything that can be put back into the loop. Also, our business is conducted mostly online with a couple of employees telecommuting, thus saving gas.

Don’t Get Blindsided by the Green Washing

We’ve factored all areas on being keen on green, so why not go solar? Solar panels are a huge investment in more ways than one. Not only are they expensive to install, but they run a risk to you. A cloudy spell can lead to network downtime and bring your business to a standstill.

An alternative to harvesting backyard energy, are purchasing Renewable Energy Credits (RECs).  A third party calculates a company’s energy use by kilowatt per hour (kWh).  The company then exchanges the kWh by purchasing RECs. These credits put back into the power grid through projects such as wind power farms or tree planting creating energy neutrality. We are currently researching the idea because it is important that the third party uses the credits wisely, as many companies pay their way to green without effectively helping the environment.
